I. Citizen Comments
Ms. Norma Gaither, President, Lamda Omega Chapter of AKA, thanked City Council for the work they did on behalf of the City. The women of the AKA has been working for over 78 years. Participated in a number of projects in the community. Partnered with several schools. Raised over 8,000 for Relay for Life Team. Participated in AKA Day at the Capitol. Planning Community Empowerment program. Offered a packet of information to members of City Council voicing their concerns. Please support community service organizations.
Mr. Mark Hewes - offered good news about his development of a new golf game for the Police Department that he was willing to give to the City. He stated the game had the potential to generate $400,000 in revenue the first year and $1 million plus in years to come.
Mr. Joey Taylor - retired Newport News Firefighter, voiced concern about corruption of matters in Newport News. Confronted officials with allegations of truth and facts and noted he has been met with harrassment in the form of law suits. He stated State Police went to his 16 year daughter’s high school to question her about him.
Adam Varner - former Marine and new candidate for City Council asked that all work together to revive the SE Community. He voiced concern about a recent visit to City Hall where City representatives where reluctant to talk about the City's budget or his job as a member of City Council was not to bring supermarkets to the SE Community.
Ms. M. Shabazz - 2210 Oak Avenue, Newport News, addressed issue where she was misquoted in the James River Journal on Feb. 23, 2012. She voiced concern about not receiving a reply from the City about initiatives she suggested being implemented at the February 14, 2012 Regular Meeitng of City Hall, i.e. Black History Exhibit in the City Hall lobby in honor of February as Black History Month and Energy Efficient Light proposal for residents of low income areas.

Participated in Patient Advocate Program Gala at the Marriott this past weekend. Thanked President Nancy Davenport for her service to the Patient Advocate Foundation. She congratulated the Shipyard and the Girls Scouts on the recognition given to them tonight. She was proud to be a part of the AKA Soriety, Incorporated and the hard work done in the community working with teen girls to make them into outstanding women.

She stated she attended the Patient Advocate Foundation's Gala and noted it was a wonderful event. She congratulated the Girl Scouts on their honor. She extended condolences to Mike Hazelwood on the loss of his mother.

Congratulated members of NAACP Living Legend’s Breakfast program at First Baptist Church Denbigh; Congratulated Sister to Sister on their healthcare event at the Boys & Girls Club on February 18; Noted Promise of Hope event. Announced that TNCC had a new Steinway Piano. Free concerts would be offered in the near future. Noted March of Dimes Kick-off Breakfast on Tuesday, and he was Co-chair at Riverside Hospital and walk will be held on April 29th.
