I. Citizen Comments
Sacil Armstrong, spoke about coal piers. Mayor challenged Dominion Terminals. Misleading info., comparison should be made with population that is similar. High poverty was a major risk factor, not coal dust. How would closing Dominion be of benefit to the citizens. How would revenue be "made up."
Mr. A. C. Pulliam, addressed theft in Hidenwood, Maxwell Area. Retrofit cars with cameras. Give more money to NNPD. More can be done to protect citizens and their property. Citizens should be more vigilant. Sorry about Air Tran.
Mr. Mark Hewes, 12 Meadow Drive, NN., inventor, innovator, suggested filter system around the coals yards to cut down on coal dust. Idea for above ground reservoir to handle billions of gallons of water up to New Kent. Difficult to get a job in NN.
Ms. Joan Minarik, 114 Linbrook Drive, NN, addressed issue of Windy Knolls. Mistrustful. Faith in government is shaken.
John Procyson, 305 Normandy Lane, NN, what are you doing? Don’t care about homeless. Why giving $ to the developers. Asked Council about its motives. Commented on projects that had failed. Did not believe Council cared. Bothered by $14,000 or $2,000 per Council member to attend charitable events. Questioned claims for mileage. Good old guys and gals. Squandering millions of dollars. Should be kicked out of office. Exempted Mr. Bateman.
Justin Demeter, resident of Windy Knolls, thanked Council for hearing the home owners on 8/9/2011. Decepted into purchasing condo by BECO.
Ms. Angela Harris, 2101 Jefferson Avenue, NN, member of American Legion Post 25, shared diplomas and awards given to her son, Anthony, by various organizations. Appalled to have City Manager to propose projects on NN TV Channel. Conflict between Aaron Brooks project and another. Used tax dollars to rape robe and destroy to communities. No history. Thanked Vice Mayor McMillan.
Mavis Matthews, property owner in Windy Knolls. Crime has increased as a result of the apartments in the community. Want BECO to stick to their plans and honor what they promised.
Mr. Raymond Landrau thanked City Council for listening to the property owners at Windy Knolls, since developer would not.
Mr. Curtis Rogers, 389 Sampson Avenue, Hampton, commented on study of music, benefit of dance.
Mr. Brandon Rhoades, 6300 Rustman Place, commented on a Teen Center.
Mr. Wail Eisa, 799 Shields Road, Operator of a cab in the City. requested a level playing field for all parties. Commented on proposed changes that would affect taxicab industry.
James Rudisill, advocated or the homeless. Thanked City Council for their attentiveness to the homeless population.

1. City Manager
Announced the International Soccer Invitational and Community Outreach event sponsored by the Newport News Hispanic Advisory Committee on August 20, 2011, 8:45 a.m., at Riverview Farm Park. Reminded citizens of the peak of the hurricane season and encouraged citizens to prepare themselves.

Expressed appreciation and pride for work done by city staff on redistricting.

Invited public to attend the Field of Dreams event Saturday, 8//13/2011 at the Achievable Dream Academy. Indicated that his comments in the Coal yards article published in the Daily Press was not on behalf of City Council. Noted citizens addressing negative past history, but never offering comments about what was done well. Encouraged citizens to talk to their council members and encourage them. It was discouraging to hear from the same individuals that continuously "brow beat" Council. He encouraged the citizens to show some support.

Thanked citizens from Windy Knolls for sharing information. Announced the next regular meeting of City Council was scheduled for September 13, 2011. Commented on Field of Friends on 8/19/11 at the Boys and Girls Club on Throrncliff Drive and encouraged all citizens to attend with their children. Announced the next North District Town Hall Meeting will be held on 8/22/11.

Thanked citizens from Windy Knolls for their information and enlightening Council. Announced the unveling of the Richard Hunt Sculpture at 31st and Jefferson Avenue that was held on August 6, 2011. Asked citizens to join her on August 20, 2011, 8:00 a.m. at Mariner’s Museum Park to participate in the Boys and Girls Dental Walk. Announced the NAACP and South District Meeting scheduled for 8/25/2011, at 605 South Avenue.

Thanked citizens from Windy Knolls for sharing information. Announced the the opening of the Tide, Norfolk’s Light Rail System, on August 19, 2011. Free rides will be offered on 8/19 - 21/2011.
